Before You Apply

Community Grants are offered through an Expression of Interest (EOI) process.

To be considered, organisations must first submit a short overview of their request or project. This helps us understand the need, how it aligns with our current strategic priorities and whether to invite a full application.

You may be eligible if:

- You are a registered not-for-profit, school or community organisation operating in Western Australia.
- Your project directly supports children aged 0–18 years who are living with disability, chronic illness, or who are experiencing financial hardship or geographic isolation.

How the Application Process Works

Community Grants follow a simple process, designed to focus on the projects that will have
the greatest impact.

Submit an Expression of Interest & Review

Start by completing a short Expression of Interest form. This provides a high-level overview of your project or request, who it will support, and the impact it will have.

Our team reviews each submission to ensure it meets the eligibility criteria and aligns with Variety WA’s priorities.

Invitation to Apply & Assessment

If your project is shortlisted, you will be invited to complete a full application. At this stage, you will be asked to provide more detailed information, including supporting documents and quotes.

Full applications are assessed by the Variety WA team and Grants Committee, based on need, impact and available funding.

Outcome

You will receive an email with the outcome of your application and any next steps.

If approved, Variety WA will provide details of the next steps, including purchasing and acquittal requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Community Grants are available to schools, not-for-profit organisations and community groups in Western Australia that support children and young people.

Your request or project must benefit groups of children aged 0–18 years who are living with disability, chronic illness, isolation or disadvantage.

Community Grants support requests or projects that improve access, inclusion and wellbeing for children.
This may include:
• Inclusive playground and outdoor equipment
• Sensory spaces or sensory resources
• Assistive technology and communication devices
• Classroom or learning support resources
• Breakfast and wellbeing programs
• Inclusive sport, recreation or participation programs
• Equipment that supports access to education, play or community activities

Each request or project must clearly benefit children living with disability, chronic illness, isolation or
disadvantage

You can apply for equipment or resources as part of a request or project that supports children to participate, learn or engage in their community.
Examples include:
• Adaptive bikes or shared mobility equipment
• Communication devices or learning technology
• Sensory or calming equipment
• Inclusive play or recreational equipment

If you’re unsure whether your request or project is suitable, we recommend submitting an Expression of Interest

Community Grants follow a two-step process:
1. Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) outlining your request or project
2. If shortlisted, you will be invited to complete a full application
At the full application stage, you will be asked to provide detailed information, supporting documents and quotes.

Community Grants generally do not fund:
• Items purchased before approval (retrospective funding)
• Staffing costs or ongoing operational expenses
• Fundraising activities, prizes or scholarships
• Requests or projects that result in personal or commercial gain
• Items already widely available within your community
• Requests or projects that can reasonably be funded through government or other programs

Applications are assessed based on:
• Level of need and urgency
• Number of children who will benefit
• Expected impact on participation, wellbeing and inclusion
• Availability of other funding options
• Quality and completeness of supporting information
Funding is competitive and depends on available funds in each grant round

Yes. Variety WA supports organisations across metropolitan, regional and remote Western Australia. Community Grants are particularly valuable in regional and remote areas, where children may experience isolation and access to services, equipment and funding can be limited.

Yes. Organisations can apply in future grant rounds for new requests or projects. Each application is assessed individually, and previous funding does not guarantee approval.

If approved, funding is usually paid directly to the supplier or service provider, rather than to the organisation.
