An early love of movement

Rhiannon Clarke didn't grow up thinking her life would revolve around running. Diagnosed with cerebral palsy as a young child, her early years were shaped by navigating a world that isn't always built for ease or access.

What stood out - even then - was her determination. A quiet, consistent drive to keep moving forward.

As she stepped into athletics, that determination quickly translated into performance. Rhiannon rose through the ranks of para-athletics at an extraordinary pace, becoming the youngest athlete from any country to win a medal at the Commonwealth Games, at just 15.

Beyond Talent

Behind that early success was a reality many young athletes face - especially those living with disability. Progress requires more than talent. It requires access.

Access to coaching. Access to equipment. Access to opportunities that allow potential to grow. 

For Rhiannon, that access came through the Variety Heart Scholarship. At a critical stage in her journey, it provided the practical support she needed - from running spikes to specialised coaching - allowing her to train at a level that matched her ambition.

More than equipment

Beyond the practical support, the scholarship offered something just as important: belief. The sense that someone recognised her potential - and chose to back it. Rhiannon has spoken about how that belief shaped her confidence, helping her see what might be possible, not just what was in front of her.

Today, Rhiannon has represented Australia on the world stage, competing at both the Tokyo and Paris Paralympic Games. She is also a Variety International Ambassador - using her platform to inspire young people living with disability to pursue their goals and believe in their potential. 

Her story doesn't end with what she has achieved. It continues in what she represents: a reminder that talent can emerge anywhere - but without access, it can just as easily be lost.

Sometimes, all it takes is one moment of support to change what comes next.
